Drug and alcohol Intervention in Philadelphia
Interventions won’t work if they are harsh and punitive

Philadelphia Psychologist Intervention Introduction for Philadelphia and the Main Line

Intervention generally refers to the process where friends, loved ones, or family members help to confront the addict or alcoholic in their life in such a way that the person struggling with drug or alcohol abuse or other addiction decides to seek counseling or treatment of some kind. There are numerous ways of performing an intervention and to be sure there is is no exact best way for any individual. There is a TV show, “Intervention” on the Arts and Entertainment (A&E) network which is an excellent, albeit harrowing, show to watch in order to learn more about the general principles of an intervention.

It is important to understand though that interventions have not been well researched at all and there is little literature or science behind the process at this time. That said, it appears that an intervention can be extremely effective in many cases. A good place to start is to consult a treatment professional such as a certified addiction counselor or psychologist who specializes in the process in order to determine if the person in your life might be a good candidate for an intervention and if so what are the various considerations and factors that would determine concrete and viable options.

Intervention can be gentle, encouraging and loving

Interventions

I am affiliated with  a network of interventionists who work to help families, friends and loved ones with performing an interventions.  While there is little evidence to support the general effectiveness of the Johnson style Intervention there is mounting evidence to suggest that family members and professionals can intervene in other ways. I can help to coordinate all aspects of an individual’s intervention, treatment, aftercare and follow-up including counseling, referral to inpatient or intensive outpatient, recovery house and support groups. Some interventions though are less complicated and can be as simple as figuring out the best way to approach the person you care about and begin a conversation about your concerns in such a way that they listen and talk about the role drugs, alcohol or other addictive and compulsive behaviors may play in their life.

Intervention Information and Resources for Philadelphia, Montgomery County and the Main Line and Nationally

CRAFT – Community Reinforcement and Family Training

This is an evidenced based and empirically supported method which has shown to be effective in steering loved ones towards treatment and recovery. The Treatment Research Institute has been pioneering programs now being tested online which have compassionate and extremely promising techniques based on principles of psychological behavior therapy. I highly recommend the book Get Your Loved One Sober by Robert J. Meyers, Ph.D and Brenda L. Wolfe, Ph.D. which is based on CRAFT a “proven prevention program.”
